How to Rip DVD to Sony Xperia S

Sony Xperia S Review

The good: The Sony Xperia S flaunts an eye-catching design, Android 4.0, and a connection to Sony's large movie and music library.
The bad: The Xperia S has quirky capacitive buttons, slow 3G data, an uninspiring screen, and a pokey processor. Its $559.99 price is also steep.
The bottom line: Sony's pricey, stylish Xperia S is packed with multimedia tricks but is undone by a slow processor and lackluster display.

I can't deny that the Sony Xperia S looks striking. It comes in hues of fashion-forward white like the model I tested, and a more conservative black. Its design is also very futuristic with the phone flaunting a rectangular chassis chiseled in sharp right angles.

The Xperia S' attempt at high style, however, falls short. While a real head-turner, the boxiness of the Xperia S isn't as comfortable to grip as more traditional oval handsets sculpted with rounded curves. Another distinctive touch yet one not executed well is an illuminated clear bar running along the phone's base. The bar contains three symbols floating within its transparent surface that indicate the main Android functions for Back, Home, and Menu.

Unfortunately, as on its sibling on AT&T, the Xperia Ion, these symbols are not actual buttons. You must tap corresponding dots above each Android icon, which I found find difficult to hit, especially in the dark.

How to Rip DVD to Sony Xperia P

Sony Xperia P Review

The good: With a stunning, metal design, the Sony Xperia P has sophisticated style. It's also compact, boasts a bright screen, and connects to Sony's large music and video stores.
The bad: The Xperia P is held back by a weak CPU, outdated Android OS, and short battery life.
The bottom line: If beauty is your only priority, the Sony Xperia P will certainly satisfy, but power isn't this unlocked phone's forte.

The Xperia P sits in the middle of Sony's new NXT line of Android smartphones, one step below the flagship Xperia S, but you'd never know that from just looking at it. With its premium metallic construction and electric-red paint job, it could easily be a flagship product. Unlike the Xperia S, which is crafted from more mundane plastic, this handset has the level of luxury only aluminum can bring.

I was also struck by how much easier this phone is to handle. Measuring 4.8 inches tall by 2.3 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick, the Xperia P isn't noticeably smaller than its sibling, the Xperia S (5 inches by 2.5 inches by 0.4 inch). Its slightly smaller girth, however, makes a huge difference. That was immediately clear from the moment I grasped the Xperia P in my hand. I found its lighter 4.2-ounce weight and more compact size made it easier to grip comfortably than the bigger Xperia S.

How to Rip DVD to Nokia Lumia 521

Nokia Lumia 521 Review

The good: Nokia's Lumia 521 packs in a better camera and more software features than you might expect for its $150 off-contract price tag.
The bad: No LTE, poor screen quality, and no camera flash remind you that the 521 wasn't built to be a premium smartphone.
The bottom line: Nokia's Lumia 521 is one of the best bargain smartphones on any platform, but skip it if LTE is of paramount concern.

If you're all about value, then mosey on up to T-Mobile's Nokia Lumia 521. For $150 off-contract (or $130 if you manage to nab it from Walmart) the Windows Phone 8 device brings on solid performance and Nokia's signature apps for a bargain price.

Its biggest drawback -- besides the obvious step-down in screen and camera quality compared with the now-discontinued Lumia 810 and upcoming Lumia 925 flagship -- is that the 521 lacks LTE support. However, you won't be hobbled by 3G speeds; the 521 will still ride T-Mobile's 4G HSPA+ network.

Most $150 smartphones give you exactly what you pay for, namely cheap, functional hardware that sometimes struggles with the OS demands. The Lumia 521 delivers an above-average experience that more than fits the price, so long as you don't require T-Mobile's fastest data speeds. T-Mobile customers looking for a more complete package should scrounge up a Lumia 810 or hold out and save up for the Lumia 925, which will admittedly cost hundreds of dollars more.

How to Rip DVD to Nokia Lumia 620

Nokia Lumia 620 Review

The good: The Nokia Lumia 620 has a glare-cutting screen, a decent 5-megapixel camera, NFC, and an affordable price tag.
The bad: The Lumia 620 loses points for poor call quality, a short screen time-out, a small battery, and numerous design issues -- including a hard-to-find SIM card slot.
The bottom line: Nokia's Lumia 620 smartphone successfully delivers a complete Windows Phone 8 experience for a low price, but buyer beware of some compromises in battery, sound, and design.

The Lumia 620 is Nokia's stab at an affordable unlocked Windows Phone 8 device for the global masses, and its fun, youthful design so typical of the Lumia line will help it stand out from competitors in the same price point. Still a dual-core Windows 8 phone with front and rear cameras, the 620 isn't as stacked with high-end features as its fellows -- the screen comes in sub-4 inches, there are some design flaws, and there's no wireless charging. However, NFC, an anti-glare screen, and a decent camera make it an appealing, and fairly feature-rich, smartphone choice for budget-keepers.

In the U.S., Nokia takes careful, calculated aim at the premium and upper-mid-range markets with Lumia devices like the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 series (also: 822 and 810). Yet, it could very well be phones like the entry-level Nokia Lumia 620 that embody Nokia's strongest growth opportunity. Starting as low as $249, or about 190 euros, the Lumia 620 sells in parts of Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, but will likely not come to the U.S., at least not in its current form.

How to Rip DVD to Nokia Lumia 625

Nokia Lumia 625 Review

The good: The Nokia Lumia 625's 4.7-inch screen makes for effortless viewing, and the $300 price tag its wallet-friendly for an unlocked phone. Depending on your area, it also supports LTE.
The bad: For a phone of its size, the Lumia 625's too-low resolution is fuzzy and dull compared to premium Lumias. The 625's 5-megapixel camera struggles taking photos in the shade.
The bottom line: Despite a few faults, the Lumia 625’s smooth, higher-end design and solid performance make it a great value for the price.

The Nokia Lumia 625 is neither a premium or budget device, but instead a little bit of both.
This midrange phone comes with features normally spotted on the premium Lumia 820, 920, and 1020, including LTE (where available), a solid, sleek build, a promised long-lasting battery, and a Gorilla Glass 2 screen. On the other hand, the 625 has little internal storage and RAM, a low-resolution display, a 5-megapixel camera, and no NFC, most of which are characteristics of the lower-end Lumia 520, 521, and 620.

How to Rip DVD to Nokia Lumia 710

Nokia Lumia 710 Review

The good: Thanks to its Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS, Nokia's Lumia 710 provides plenty of power for both fun and productive uses. It has a smooth and engaging user interface, satisfying photo quality, and 720p HD video, all in a compact and affordable package.
The bad: The Lumia 710's all-plastic construction doesn't scream luxury and its small physical buttons are stiff and often tough to press. The handset also lacks a front-facing camera, so video chat is out of the question.
The bottom line: The $49.99 Nokia Lumia 710 is an excellent way to get the growing capabilities of a Windows Mango smartphone for a rock-bottom price. Though it isn't an Android superphone with a luscious AMOLED display, it's a practical device that covers all the mobile bases.

Sure, it lacks the playful colors and personalized back plates of its European cousin, but the U.S. version of the Nokia Lumia 710 shows some flair of its own. It comes in two main colors, all-black like my review sample, and a model that sports a frosty white front. Crafted from unassuming plastic, the Lumia 710 looks pretty mundane aesthetically at first glance. Once you pick up the 4.4-ounce handset, however, it's clear that it's solidly made if not luxurious. Measuring 4.69 inches tall by 2.46 inches wide by 0.49 inch thick, the compact device sports attractively rounded edges and fits into tight pockets without too much trouble. The phone's back cover has a rubbery, soft-touch coating, too, which provides a sure grip. On the front is the 3.7-inch (WVGA, 800x480-pixel resolution) LCD screen, which is smaller and not as sharp as the full-HD or even qHD displays boasted by higher-end Android devices. Also, though it lacks the fantastically deep blacks and eye-popping colors of other devices with AMOLED displays, namely the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, and Samsung Focus S, or even the original Focus, it does serve up pleasing-enough image quality.

That said, Nokia adds its special ClearBlack technology to boost screen contrast. For instance, I had a great time watching the YouTube HD trailer for "The Avengers," which boasted plenty of rich eye candy like bright fiery explosions, energy blasts, flowing capes, and Scarlett Johansson's artfully arranged red hair. Also, the Lumia 710's screen had noticeably darker blacks than the display on the HTC Radar 4G, which tended to leak some light around the edges.

How to Rip DVD to Nokia Lumia 800

Nokia Lumia 800 Review

The good: The Nokia Lumia 800 has a singular design, a stunning display, and a nice driving console in Nokia Drive.
The bad: Camera and video quality on the Lumia 800 is poor, despite the fancy specs. A front-facing camera would make the phone more competitive. The Micro-SIM slot is hard to access.
The bottom line: The unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 has an innovative design and gorgeous screen, but the poor camera quality and lack of a front-facing camera are major detractions.

The Lumia 800, like the Meego-based Nokia N9 it's modeled on, is one interesting-looking phone. Worked from a solid piece of colored polycarbonate (a specific type of plastic), the smooth magenta, cyan, or black Lumia 800 reminds me of a fat stick of chewing gum (I reviewed it in black). It has a tabletop head and tail and rounded sides. The material, whose properties include resisting heat damage and denting, feels solid and durable in the hand, if a little bit slippery. It measures 4.59 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide by 0.47 inch thick. Thanks, in part, to its uniform shape, the handset doesn't take up too much room in closer-fitting pockets.

On the right spine you'll find the slim metal volume rocker, the power button, and the camera shutter button. A push-in door covers the Micro-USB charging port. Once you open that, you can slide out the Micro-SIM card holder, but this combo is an inelegant, unintuitive action that requires some patience until you get used to it. There's also a 3.5mm headset jack up top. The back is home to the 8-megapixel camera lens with dual-LED flash. There's no battery cover on the back of this phone, so prepare to press and hold the power button to perform a hard reset should things go wrong (just like on iOS devices) instead of a battery pull, should things go wrong.
